Phase III

Phase III
-How my understandings changed regarding the listed categories
-Describe how this might impact your future teaching experiences
1. Assessing Prior Knowledge- There where different ways to asses prior knowledge of the student. The strategy varies depending on the subject they were teaching. They quizzes to asses prior knowledge in math. They did KWL charts in science. Others had questions before their lessons and reviews to help them with new step or addition. This has helped me that there needs to be some form of formal testing to verify that the students are ready for another lesson.
2. Planning Instruction- Through all the lessons I believe my instruction was adequate for my lesson. Like I said before I added vocabulary so I would not use words like “the top number” anymore. This will gain more vocabulary in their repertoire. Also it would help it facilitate the learning in the future with more difficult problems.
3. Designing Instruction- Designing instruction has been changed completely. In this class I learned a whole new arsenal for Instruction with technology. For example the smart board can cover all the different areas of learning. Revolutionize the pencil and paper strategy of learning. What I liked the most about my peers presentation was how easily accessible they were without paying high amounts of money. For example many of my peers used you tube videos to further explain their lesson. This would attract the children’s attention. They use games as well to practice their learning and to internalize it.
4. Planning Assessment- My understanding of assessment changed as well. In their lesson plans many ask the students to be creative and use their imagination to present the information that was asked from them. The assessments ranged from a typical poster board that explained the differences between two countries to a picture story which was a total new concept to me. Therefore understanding of the assignment can be measures in varies different forms except I wonder how they rubric was like on grading.
5. Instructional Decisions/Teaching- My teaching skills where not my strong point. All my different differentiated instruction helped to compensate. My understanding of teaching was to have all the different accommodations for the students and the correct answers but teaching is not only that. I need more personality and spark so that the students pay more attention. Interaction is key to spark learning between the whole class. Another thing that I realized was that the class needs to be somewhat like a family atmosphere in order to function. This way all the children express their thoughts and opinions without being judged. This will help in the future to choose my words better with children and recognize their efforts in participation.
6. Assessment of Learning- The assessment of learning in some grades and setting really was not anything physical or concrete. In some lesson plans the assessment of the learning was the student’s participation and following along with the lesson. For example the lesson plan where the children sang the ABC’s songs the teacher assessed the students by their participation not by anything tangible. This brings a whole new meaning to me for assessment. Sometimes the students actually following along and paying attention is a great effort and that itself is something to take into consideration. Then after participation the teacher can build to paper and pencil assessments.

Phase II

Phase II
1.       Describe and justify modifications made
Individual’s Needs-
-Students that lack motor skills- I realized that I had created an accommodation without realizing it. By Think, Pair, Share procedure the students created the numbers used in the addition and subtraction sentences with their Deane cubes as part of the participation and if they could not for any given reason manipulate them then their partner would help  them.
-For slow learning Students- Another accommodation that came to mind was to keep the manual and virtual manipulatives available through their assessment if the students seem it necessary. Another thing that was brought to my attention was wait time. They told me that the way I teach is way too fast paced not for my students that I had but it may be for those who have just met with the new concept of carry and borrow.

To maintain alignment to goals and objectives
Integrate Vocabulary to the lesson:
1.       Minuend
2.       Subtrahend
3.       Difference
4.       Addend
5.       Augend
6.       Sum
7.       Ones
8.       Tens
The thing that I could have done differently was have a ticket out the door with two questions. One question regarding vocabulary from the lesson, and one of an actual math problem. Practice helps them learn it. This will give me an insight on what I need to review for the next day. There will be a diagram of a math equation regarding addition or subtraction and I would ask which number is called what in the equation for the vocabulary assessment.
2.       Assessment of Learning
Your Students Level of Success in achieving the lessons goals-
The Students achieved the lessons goals and objective. Their feedback on my presentation was positive. The students had different ways they had to participate which helped their learning. The students followed along wonderfully with the manipulatives and the Prezi presentation as well. I realized that the manipulatives would have to be presented prior to the lesson because children started playing with them. This would have to be practiced with their regular one digit equation on their counting mat that was done by hand. This way when we introduce the new concept of borrow and carry, the representation of numbers with manipulatives in a two digit form will be easier to follow. The assesment was returned and most of the students got 100% on the worksheets which mean they grasp the concept.

The level of success you had in teaching the lesson-
The anticipatory set went very well with the students and started answering my questions quickly to share their thoughts. Then to my surprise my anticipatory set also served me as a tool to explain place values with the baskets. This was enforced by my mini lesson explanation on the prezi which had the students engaged due to its dynamic movement.
The only thing where my lesson plan did not go as planned, was with my virtual manipulative.
I wanted to use the website interactively with my students. I could control the virtual manipulatives through the computer and the students as well but the ideal tool would be the smartboard. This way the student will feel they are actually carrying and borrowing just like the tangible manipulatives but in front of the class with the smart board.

The Websites I used for my Lesson Plan

Hey guys, thank you for your constructive criticism. I will take into consideration all the things you said and apply it for next time. Thanks for being so positive as well. Remember if something negative is said I wont take it personal it will be something for me to think about, and try to do better next time I teach. Here are the tools I used in my lesson for you guys to steal!

Math Worksheets- Softschools-Softschools.com
The website provides the teacher the ability to control the range of the numbers on the worksheet and the number of problems as well. This can help with the difficulty level for later lessons.
Virtual Manipulatives-  National Library of Virtual Manipulatives- http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/vlibrary.html
Has a variety of manipulatives for all grades and levels of math.
